Senegal Wins AFCON As Sadio Mane Scores Penalty

 

Senegal has won the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations after defeating Egypt in a penalty shootout.

After both teams had scored their first penalties, Egypt's Mohamed Abdelmonem struck the post with his second, but goalie Gabaski stopped Bouna Sarr's bad shot. Following that, both teams scored penalties, with Senegal's Edouard Mendy saving a weak spot-kick from Mohamed Lasheen.

After seeing a penalty saved by Gabaski in normal time, Sadio Mane stepped up for Senegal and made no mistake in securing Senegal's first-ever AFCON victory. Senegal won 4-2 and Mane's Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah did not get the chance to take a penalty.

Mane had the game's finest chance in regular time, but he missed his seventh-minute penalty kick after Saliou Ciss was fouled in the box. Mane’s penalty was terrible in truth, as his blasted effort lacked accuracy and was saved by Gabaski.

Senegal dominated possession for the majority of the game, with Egypt limited to counter-attacks.

Salah struggled to gain a foothold in the game, but drew a brilliant stop from Mendy with a left-footed attempt that appeared to be destined for the top left corner midway through the first half.

Both teams struggled to produce any genuine chances in the second half, which was littered with tactical fouls. Gabaski was called upon to thwart Mane once more in the 52nd minute, as he smothered a loose ball in the box just as the Senegalese forward tried to pounce.

At the start of extra time, Senegal substitute Bamba Dieng had a fantastic chance to score, but Gabaski saved his effort under pressure.

Egypt had to go to extra time for the fourth time in the tournament after losing to Cameroon, Morocco, and the Ivory Coast in regular time.
